Lopez Island Trip
August 8-9, 2009

The camping trip is on a beautiful, primitive peninsula at the south end of the island. You take the ferry from Anacortes to Lopez Island, and bike or drive the 10 miles to the campground. The last mile or so is on a dirt road. Duncan Prindle will provide detailed driving instructions. The map below gives the idea.

The ferry is not cheap. Sign up here for the campout and indicate if you would like to participate in a bulk purchase of ferry tickets.

There is an outhouse and a large fire pit with some benches around it and a table. There is no fresh water besides what you bring, and there is no electric power. There is cleared land for camping. Lots of driftwood for the fireplace. If you forget something you can take a run to the store in Richardson.

Amusement consists of walking, eagle watching, splashing in tide pools, boating (bring a kayak, an inflatable, a canoe, or borrow somebody's), dozing, sunning, swimming (brrrr, it is cold), fishing, cooking, eating, drinking...

Rules are few and simple: No pets; no fires outside the main fire pit; respect the environment. Here are the official rules. Be especially sensitive to fire danger.

If you bring a car, the ferry trips that go to and from Lopez only, without other islands, are usually not filled up long before sailing time. The Friday evening ferries do get filled up early. If you go Thursday evening you will have better luck. Returning on Sunday, the 3:35pm and 8:25pm ferries only take traffic from Lopez and especially the 8:25pm ferry should not require a long wait. The trips that go to more islands get full, and you may have to wait for the next ferry.
