Neutrino Mass Experiment

Project 8 is being developed as a corollary to the KATRIN neutrino mass search.  It is currently in its second phase of prototype testing.

July 2012 - Experimental Progress

Project 8'ers are hard at work. Another data run is scheduled for August. Stay tuned!

September 2011 - Experimental Progress

The first test run of the Project 8 prototype has been successfully completed!  The insert carrying the prototype was lowered into the magnet bore and pumped down to an acceptable pressure with minimal leakage.  The magnet was then cooled down to 4K with liquid helium, then Kr83 was inserted into the system.  Over the course of several hours, over a terabyte of data was gathered.  Data analysis is currently underway.

A prototype experiment in the process of being developed at the University of Washington in Seattle to show that the measurement technique is feasible.

We are currently beginning the testing of our new prototype design. Data has been taken and analysis is underway. It is a very exciting time for the collaboration!
