Gravitational Waves

Our group provides both instrumentation and measurements in support of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).

We have made extensive investigations of possible sources of noise and systematic effects in the LISA spacecraft (see sidebar link and publications).

We have investigated the effects of proximity-enhanced gas damping on precision measurements. Without proper design considerations, this effect can affect measurements of gravitational waves at the low-frequency end of the LIGO spectrum.

We are designing, building, and comissioning a new absolute tiltmeter in support of the LIGO active seismic isolation system.
