Diagnostic tools for Project 8 atomic tritium development

Abstract:

Project 8 aims to measure the neutrino mass using cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES). Project 8, KATRIN, and other tritium endpoint neutrino mass measurement experiments have previously used a molecular tritium source. An atomic tritium source will be needed to achieve better sensitivity, and Project 8 is developing ways produce, cool, and store it. UW is developing a test stand to assess the efficiency of various methods that dissociate molecular hydrogen isotopes into atomic form and begin the cooling process. My talk will discuss the various diagnostic tools used to understand the efficiency of different dissociators and their effects on the resulting beam.
