The science reach of the CENPA Van de Graaff accelerator

Abstract:

The Van de Graaff accelerator at CENPA is an important part of the lab’s goal to probe new physics.   Our primary user, the He6-CRES collaboration, is currently executing an extended data taking run, producing copious quantities of the rare isotopes Ne19 and He6.  We have near-term plans to perform runs for PIONEER detector development, isotope production for LEGEND.   Concurrently, we have made significant inroads towards maintaining hardware, and updating the control system our 60-year old accelerator.    In this talk, I will give an overview of the VdG’s mechanism, the physics searches it supports, and the challenges and successes of maintaining it.
