Newtonian Noise and the Impact of Terrestrial Gravitational Fluctuations on Gravitational-Wave Detectors

Abstract:

As Gravitational-Wave detectors like LIGO get increasingly sensitive, excess noise caused by fluctuations in gravitational fields (Newtonian Noise) will limit detection capabilities in the lower frequency bands. In this talk I’ll discuss the history of Newtonian Noise research, and methods and techniques currently being developed to measure, prevent, and account for it in future Gravitational Wave detectors.
