Abstract:
In this talk I will give updates about our group’s solid argon test bench built here at CENPA. I will first motivate these studies and give a summary of past activities to develop suitable freezing techniques. I will then pass to describe our recent tests aimed to characterize solid argon scintillation properties, and how these compare with liquid argon’s. Then, I will show how we’re planning to use this test bench to validate the design of an argon purification apparatus that we’re about to prototype. Finally, I’ll introduce our plans to study other properties of solid argon that would be useful to a wider suite of low-background experiments, such as electron transport and neutron vs gamma/beta pulse shape discrimination.
